On Sat. Feb. 25, 2017, Reach Out and Read San Diego presented Lower School students and their families with the Golden Book Award for donating more than 2,644 gently used books for the past two years to local clinics across the San Diego County.

Reach Out and Read San Diego (RORSD) is an early literacy education program implemented in local pediatric offices and run by the local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 2015, Parker Lower School students held a gently used book drive and collected more than 1,644 books. One of the pediatric offices adopted by Parker is the San Diego Family Care Clinic in Linda Vista. Emma Moore ’16 delivered books and met with the doctors and staff. In addition, Parker student Ella Ludwig, Class of 2023, helped Reach Out and Read and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer present some of the books collected to a pediatric clinic at Central Elementary School.

In December 2016, Lower School held another book drive and collected more than 1,000 more additional books. Upper School students have been assisting RORSD with distributing books to local clinics and participating in local book reads. RORSD wanted to dedicate this award to Parker and its student’s commitment to bring awareness to early literacy education.
