Described as the most loving and warm person you will ever learn science from, Rose Hanscom, retired Upper School science teacher, received a special dedication from Upper School’s social justice students. On the morning of March 15, Parker students surprised Rose with a bench featuring her name at the entrance of Famosa Slough.
When asked about the dedication, Rose said, “Famosa Slough is a special place to me. I love it. I’ve taken many AP Environmental classes there on field trips. When the students came to tell me about the bench, my eyes immediately filled with tears.”
Famosa Slough is a 37-acre wetland located between Ocean Beach and the San Diego Sports Arena area. The students knew this was a beloved place for Rose and decided to use the money raised from their annual Sochella Music Festival for the project. Working with the Friends of Famosa Slough organization, they placed the bench in the perfect spot for visitors to enjoy the views of local wildlife.
“It is a wonderful place to sit and bird watch, one of my favorite activities. I’m excited for the community to also enjoy this place with me,” added Rose.
Even though she is retired, Rose has been keeping busy with many projects including coaching Upper School’s Science Olympiad team and training with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project to help bring awareness to climate change.
