Parker’s Speech and Debate Team recently hosted its Summer Workshops.

The first week focused on Public Forum and Parliamentary Debate; two partner events in which Parker students frequently compete at tournaments. The start of the second week included a guest speaker from Bonita Vista High School who helped demonstrate Lincoln Douglas debate and spoke to new members about his experiences. The students then learned about Platform Events which are prepared speeches and performances that allow competitors to showcase their creativity. Finally, the group was introduced to Spontaneous Events, including Impromptu and Extemporaneous, two events in which Parker students have enjoyed much success.

The two-week intensive series of workshops ended with an exciting SPAR (Spontaneous Argumentation) tournament. Overall, the workshops were very successful and laid a foundation for 27 new and returning members to discover the many opportunities they have while participating with the Speech and Debate Team.

We encourage all Parker Upper School students to reach out to the Team’s Co-Presidents, Sophia Epley ([email protected]) and Alec Sheres ([email protected]), if they are interested in joining or have any questions. We are looking forward to an exciting season this fall.
