FOOTBALL DEFEATS CLAIREMONT, MOVES TO 2-0
The Parker Football team ran their record to 2-0 on Friday, as they defeated the Clairemont Chieftans in their home opener by a final score of 56-6.
For the second consecutive game, the Lancer offense exploded out of the gate, scoring 21 points in both the first and second quarter to take a commanding 42-6 lead into the halftime locker room. After a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ryan Sanborn on the opening drive, Senior Jonathan Gordon continued the scoring, returning a punt 63 yards for a touchdown. With just over 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Sanborn found freshman receiver Camden McCormick open in the corner of the end zone, as the two connected for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Clairemont began the second quarter with a successful drive deep into Lancer territory, but the Lancers emerged unscathed after Junior Apolo Samikolgu recovered a fumble to give possession back to Parker. Four plays later, Sanborn and Gordon would connect for a 56-yard touchdown strike. Junior Sam Camposeco capped off the first half scoring with a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs.
For the game, Camposeco led the Lancers in rushing, gaining 85 yards on 11 carries. Ryan Sanborn had 9 carries for 77 yards and was 6-11 through the air, throwing for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jonathan Gordon caught 3 passes on the day for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns in addition to returning a punt for a touchdown.
Defensively, the Lancers got a balanced effort from several players. Linebackers Sam Camposeco and Ryan Horne were stalwarts in the middle, notching 8 and 5 tackles respectively. Junior Safety Russell Childs had two pass breakups, and Juniors Apolo Samikoglu and Trevor Brokowski both recovered fumbles for timely turnovers.
The Lancers will be back in action this Friday, August 31, when they travel to take on Montgomery High School for a 7 pm kickoff.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL BEGINS THE SEASON WITH A DRAMATIC WIN
The Parker girls volleyball team kicked off their season 1-0, pulling out a thrilling victory over Rancho Bernardo High School in 5 games.
After taking the first two games by scores of 25-22 and 25-19, the Lancers dropped the 3rd and 4th games, setting up a winner-take-all game 5. The squad saved their best for when they needed it the most, and emerged victorious, taking the 5th game 15-13 and winning the match.
The Lancers were led offensively by Junior Callie Keating who recorded 18 kills. Sophomore Rio Lacey added 12 kills of her own. Freshman setter Chloe Hooker was sensational in her first high school contest, dishing out 48 assists. The Lancer defense was consistent throughout the match, as the team recorded 59 digs over the course of the 5 games. Senior Berkeley Hayes led the team with 20.
The Lancers will play twice next week, both at home, as they take on coastal league rival Pacific Ridge on Tuesday, Aug. 28 before hosting El Capitan (Coached by former Parker Girls Volleyball Coach Eric Sato) on Thursday, Aug. 30. Both matches start at 5:30 pm.
