BOYS SAND VOLLEYBALL
Our boys had a busy two weeks. Many of our teams participated in the tournaments last weekend, with great results. In the Coronado tournament on Saturday, Sept. 22, freshmen pair Andreas Cardenas-Marouf and Jackson DeWitt came back from early losses in pool play to finish second in the varsity division, with senior Spencer Thoene and junior Mark Tankersley just behind them in third. In the JV division, junior duo Rafter Sprague and Connor Duncan won it all, with fellow juniors Will Murray and Mitchell Trossen clinching third. And on Sunday, seniors Nick Gustafson and Bijan Sagart took third in the CBVA tournament. Well done, boys!
Then on Thursday, the boys were back in league action, facing Point Loma. Our 1 and 2 teams took early wins. On the 1 court, Mark served a fantastic fifteen serves in a row, including several aces, resulting in a 21-5 final score in the second game. Over at the 2 court, seniors Bijan Sagart and Axel Youngdale also finished in two games, 21-12, 21-14. One of the more memorable points was a beautiful pass from Axel, which Bijan rewarded with a straight down kill that left all who saw mesmerized. “It was one of the greatest hits I’ve ever seen,” Axel recounted to his teammates.
The 3 court was a close battle. Andreas and Jackson took the second game and were able to come back from a large deficit in the third game because they adapted to their opponents, partially from their own keen observations as well as key advice from Spencer. They lost by just two points in the third. On the 4 court, juniors Billy Harrington and Rodrigo Gallardo had only six points separating them from the win. Regardless, they deserve praise for their hard work in practice, which has kept them in our top five teams. With those two losses, it all came down to court 5, featuring juniors Ben Sheres and Alex Hernandez. The boys’ smart shots and solid defense allowed them to press ahead in the third game, finishing with a 15-13 final score.
Next week, the boys have another Thursday match. They will face Clairemont at OB at 4. As always, we thank all the parents and fans who come out to support. Go Parker!
