Berkley Hayes, Class of 2019, was named the CIF Spirit of Sport San Diego Section award winner for the fall 2018-19 season. She receives a scholarship as part of the award and joins 19 other section winners from across the state in the honor.
A passionate volleyball player, Berkley announced her commitment to play at Syracuse University at the San Diego Sports Association’s college announcement and signing event in November 2018.
Berkley has been playing volleyball for six years and helped lead the Lancers to the CIF Division II playoffs last fall. The Lancers ultimately fell to Escondido High School in the first round of the playoffs.
The CIF Spirit of Sport Award recognizes student-athletes who live the ideals of “pursuing victory with honor” in their lives and athletic endeavors, and who are positive role models within their schools and the community at large.
Berkley said the award embodies her own contagious energy and excitement for the sport she is so passionate about.
“I do my best to lead by example by bringing energy and a positive attitude everytime I step onto the court,” says Berkley. “I show up early to every practice and game, and help set up our practice before my teammates arrive.”
“Along with that,” Berkley continues, “I show up to school with a positive mentality and act with kindness towards my teachers and peers.”
Her coach John Landicho, former head coach of Parker’s girls volleyball team, said Berkley is an extraordinary player who “checks off all the boxes” of what he looks for in a student-athlete: talented, hardworking, reliable, an exceptional teammate, and a person who reaches for greatness on a daily basis and is passionate about the program.
“As one of our team captains this year, she also provided strong leadership to a very young starting lineup,” says John.
