Windows and Mirrors: Reflecting the Student Experience at Parker

On the first day of Black History Month, Upper Schoolers participated in Parker’s fourth annual Diversity Day, focusing on the intersection of race, class, and gender. The very next day, Parker hosted its first Pollyanna, a day-long diversity conference that invites local private and independent schools into one room to work towards a common goal. This year’s goal: building and sustaining a diverse community that reflects the student experience.

Bridging School Divisions

For those in Grades 6 and 9, it is an especially significant occasion as they bridge to a new school division. Grade 6 students leave behind the comforts of the Lower School that some have known since Junior Kindergarten, and Grade 9 students are about to embark on their last four years of school before heading off to college.

Think, Act, Reflect.

The whole-School approach to community engagement brings focus and alignment to this work at all three divisions and furthers the School’s mission of character development and value-based learning. It also pushes students out of their comfort zones by taking them out of the classroom and educates them about relevant,
real issues facing their communities. It’s one thing for students to learn about homelessness in San Diego in social studies class, it’s another to prepare and serve meals and engage in conversation with the human beings standing in front of them.

The Grade 5 Eco Adventures Project

There is a sense of urgency in the air as teams of Grade 5 students desperately grab for bamboo sticks, branches, and cordage in the Gooding Family Courtyard. With basic handmade tools, the students work together to use the natural materials to create a survival shelter for their team.
