The Lancer football team defeated Tri-City Christian 28-20 last Friday night to advance to the CIF Division 5 Championship game. It was the 4th straight win for the Lancers, who avenged their only loss of the season.
The Lancers started fast, forcing an Eagle punt on the game’s opening possession and then scoring a touchdown on their ensuing drive to take a 7-0 lead. Senior Ryan Sanborn scored on a 3 yard quarterback keeper to cap off the 12-play 48-yard drive.
The Lancers found rough sledding throughout the remainder of the first half, as Tri City Christian would score the game’s next 20 points, taking advantage of 2 Parker turnovers.
While the Eagles took a commanding 13 point lead into the halftime locker room, the Lancers responded with a well executed 2nd half. Jonathan Gordon found Trevor Brokowski open behind the secondary for a 40 yard touchdown on an option pass, then was on the receiving end of 2 Sanborn touchdown passes in the 4th quarter that put the Lancers in front for good. The Lancer defense pitched a shutout in the 2nd half, forcing 2 punts, an interception, and a turnover on downs in the game’s final minutes that sealed the 8 point victory.
Sanborn finished the game 11 for 22 passing for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gordon caught 4 passes for 73 yards and both touchdowns in addition to the touchdown he threw. Brokowski was effective both on the ground and through the air, rushing 5 times for 65 yards in addition to his 3 catches for 85 yards. Juniors Sam Camposeco and Russell Childs were all over the field defensively, making 19 and 13 tackles respectively. Senior Linebacker Ryan Horne added 13 tackles of his own while Freshman Camden McCormick added a game-changing Interception.
The win puts the Lancers into the CIF San Diego Section Division 5 Championship game, where they will face Orange Glen High School. The Patriots enter with an 8-3 record and are the top overall seed in Division 5. Friday’s game will be played at Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista, with kickoff slated for 7pm.
