Three Parker seniors awarded National Merit scholarships

Kainoa MacDonald and Pallavi Murthy, both Class of 2020, were recently selected as winners of the prestigious National Merit $2,500 Scholarship, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced last week.

The scholarship program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. According to NMSC, approximately 1.6 million high school students enter the program each year, of which roughly 7,600 finalists are selected to receive a Merit Scholarship.

Q&A with Grade 12 student Gabriel Jinich

Parker Upper School student Gabriel Jinich, Class of 2020, recently spoke to Parker School News about his award-winning mini-documentary, “Environmental Racism in Barrio Logan.”

The film, which has already garnered a second-place award at the UCLA Environmental Film Festival and a third place honor in the high school documentary division at the MyHero International Film Festival, is being streamed online today for the Earth Day premiere of the New Roads School’s Inaugural Climate Changemaker Teen Film Festival.

Parker named California ‘Green Ribbon School’

Francis Parker School has been named a recipient of the 2020 California Green Ribbon Schools award, the California Department of Education (CDE) announced Wednesday morning.

This is the second straight year the School has been named a Green Ribbon School–last year Parker was awarded Silver Level (achievement of 65-74.9 percent) and this year attained Gold Level (achievement of 75 percent or better).

Parker alumna Lauren Hirsh ’93 was looking for a way that her family and neighbors could show their gratitude for the doctors and nurses tirelessly working to combat the COVID-19 global pandemic.

So on the afternoon of Friday, April 3, they met at the front of their driveways along Via Corona in La Jolla and began creating large-scale chalk art. ‘Quaranteened’

Stuck at home, Ellie Lewis wanted to find a way to educate and connect her peers, so the Parker Upper School student set out to create an outreach website for teens.

“Quaranteened” serves as a resource that students can use to learn about COVID-19 and also as a support system, explains Ellie, Class of 2023.
